The year
1995 marked a turning point in the social calendar of the Filipino
community in Dubai. It was in this year that Mrs. Gladys Reyes,
the diminutive yet highly dynamic newly appointed OWWA Welfare
Officer, introduced an alternative wholesome form of entertainment
for Filipino expatriates - the increasingly popular ballroom
dancing-together with other committed volunteers-cum-dance enthusiasts.
The "Filipino
Dance Club-Dubai (FDC-D)" was thus born and the program
came to be known as the "Dance Clinic" after proper
deliberation.
The FDC-D,
in association with the Philippine Embassy, Office of the Labor
Attache, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration-Filipino Workers’
Resource Center, runs the basic and advance Dance Clinic thrice
every year.
Beginners
classes are being conducted for swing, cha-cha, boogie and
tango while advance classes teaches different latin dances
such as salsa, rhumba, jives, reggae foxtrot and
cha cha cha for a period of three months.
Volunteer
dance instructors and instructresses are all alumni and bonafide
members of the FDC-D. At the end of each clinic, students are
required to pass an examination which will lead to a graduation
ceremony.
Among the
graduates, the five best female and five best male dancers will
be selected and paired to compete during the graduation ceremony.
Bonafide
members are those who are paying members and who are already
adept in ballroom dancing or any other form of dance.
